Opening Reception, Friday, April 14, 6 - 9 pm Main Gallery : Terence La Noue Back Gallery : New works by sculptor Bill Burk
Flanders Contemporary Art is very pleased to announce our new exhibitions opening Friday, April 14 with a reception from 6 - 9 pm. We are very pleased to announce our main gallery exhibit: a solo show by New York painter Terence La Noue. Our show will focus on recent paintings and works on paper. La Noue has had an impressive career as a leader of the second generation of international abstraction. Since obtaining his masters degree from Cornell in the late 1960ís La Noue has traveled extensively, always bringing to his work images and markers from his experiences and weaving them into his abstract sensibility. His last show in Minneapolis was in 1998, and his most recent showing in Chicago this last winter was a huge success. Featured among his new paintings, are pieces from his Ancient and Lost Rivers series. Having worked on these paintings for numerous years, La Noue has incorporated water, destination and myth - all major motifs in his work - to create images that take the viewer away to these distant or ancient lands. The paintings are only a beginning, as their texture, color and mystery lead the mind to places far beyond those listed in the titles. La Noue masterfully uses paint, shape and texture - molded canvases and carved wood, layers of gauze and acrylic, cut, carved and layered again. So that the result becomes an abstracted reconfiguration, a memory, a contemplation - color and form imbued with personal history. Terence La Noue can certainly be credited as a major influence in contemporary art and his legacy can be found in museums and collections around the world. Closer to home his work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Walker Art Center and Pillsbury, Inc. here in Minneapolis and numerous private collections throughout the country.
Showing in our annex gallery space, will be new works from sculptor Bill Burk. His new series of wall hanging sculptures feature forms that may be thought of as weapons, tools or religious symbols, but every viewer's notion will be different. Dealing with religion, aggression, morality and sexuality, viewer's interpretations of the sculptures will be vastly different. Working out of his studio in West Hartford, Connecticut, Burk has created a splendid new series that will have its midwest gallery premier here at Flanders Contemporary Art. Mr. Burk will also be in attendance at the opening reception. The Friday, April 14th opening runs from 6 - 9 pm in conjunction with the opening of Kelly Connoleís ceramic sculptures at the Kellie Rae Theiss Gallery. Flanders Contemporary Art is located at 400 First Avenue North, first floor, in the Wyman Building. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm and by appointment. |
