Flanders Contemporary Art is pleased to announce our new featured exhibits-The Prints of the Lincoln Center/List Collection, New paintings by Su Xinping and Recent Paintings of Bruce Nygren, all opening with a reception on Friday, April 20th from 6 to 9 p.m. All three exhibits will run through June 2, 2001.

In our main space we are pleased to present New Paintings of Su Xinping. Su Xinping was born in the 1960's in inner-Mongolia, and most of his work has been drawn from the people of this area. Less technical or consumer based, and embracing a simpler way of life, his painting's characters often seem in the midst of survival and day to day living. Having grown up in this environment, his paintings tend to favor a calmness or peacefulness to them, but this has not always been the case. The work created from his time in Beijing reflected the pace of a rampant society consuming all that stood in its way. Returning to his Mongolian past, his new paintings reference the hope of a people, who still believe in a life without commercialism and societal excesses.

Also in our main space, we are pleased to present the paintings of local sensation Bruce Nygren. Nygren, who has been featured in exhibits and galleries around the country, may best be described by the word whimsical, which was included in the title of his last gallery showing at Flanders in 1999. Antique toys, fruit and other motifs are combined in tableau settings, which he translates into stunning oil paintings. Flying houses and other scenes of familiar life turned on its side, further add to his repertoire as a painting genius. The scenes he paints often seem embedded with their own sense of playfulness, energy and life. Mr. Nygren will be on hand for the opening night festivities.
