Flanders Contemporary Art

Current Exhibitions      May 3 , 2003 - June 21, 2003

Opening Reception Saturday, May 3rd from 6-9 PM

Flanders Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the opening of new exhibitions this May 3rd of 2003.

In the large gallery, Twin Cities-based artist, Bruce Nygren's fantastic, whimsical, landscapes and still lifes will animate the room. Whether it be dog buildings howling to their heart's content in the urban nightscape, toys floating serenely with the lack of gravity, seashells that seem by their perspective to be the size of trucks, or light bulbs dancing about the sky, the urge to look twice is hard to fend off. In the brilliantly simple success of Nygren's effort, he has found a way - even in this modern world - to blithely tap our sense of wonder.

The gallery next door will exhibit a new series of Spanish landscape paintings by Wade Hoefer. They reference the ancient coast, the meandering River Ter, the antique villages and their olive groves punctuated by solitary cypresses. This show will also feature a large, horizontal painting based on a California landscape, as well as a more unusual series of floral paintings. Hoefer's work is internationally known and collected.

In the project room Flanders will exhibit a brand new suite of 26 prints, titled "House" by Jennifer Bartlett. In this series of prints Bartlett readdresses a signature image of the primal Western house form she explored earlier in her career. In her studio various printmaking processes have been used to create 14 x 14 inch colorful works that continue to explore the many different systems of marks and patterns Bartlett is interested in. Each individual work touches us with the power of an icon. Yet the images can be presented in tile-like format to reveal their interrelationships. Bartlett's works are represented in contemporary art and print collections around the world.

Flanders Contemporary Art is located at 400 North First Avenue, first floor in the Wyman Building. Gallery hours are 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday, and by appointment. FFI: Contact Doug Flanders or Tasha Kubesh at 612-344-1700 or by email at <art@flanders-art.com>.
