Opening Reception with artists and publisher Friday October 27, from 6
to 9 p.m.
Main Gallery : Sam Gilliam, Recent Works
Smith-Andersen Editions, New monoprints
Flanders Contemporary Art is very pleased to announce our next two
featured exhibitions, both opening with a reception with the artists
and publishers on Friday, October 27th from 6-9 p.m. On view will be
the Recent Works of Sam Gilliam and the Prints of Fine Art Publishers
- Smith-Andersen Editions.
In
our main space we will be showing the Recent Works of Internationally
renowned artist Sam Gilliam. Having received numerous awards,
fellowships and grants, Mr. Gilliam has never stopped in his relentless
pursuit of pushing the envelope. Whether
challenging process or presentation methods, Gilliam forces the viewer
to look at art with a much different set of eyes.
Initially working with paper, Gilliam moved onto canvas, then loose
canvas and sculptures.
His
new work is a culmination of all of this. He has created sculptures
that incorporate moving parts, rich textures and striking vivid color.
Sam Gilliam will fly in from his current home in Washington D.C.for
the exhibit.
Smith-Andersen
will bring to town the newest and best in contemporary printmakers,
with a stunning collection of monotypes from modern masters from around
the world. Paula
Kirkeby and a number of California-based artists will be in attendance.
Names such as Nathan Oliveira, Bruce Conner, Michael Mazur, James
Havard, Kris Cox and a selection of others, establish this show,
as a definite must see. Local favorites, Steven Sorman and Bruce
Nygren, who have recently completed prints with Smith-Andersen,
will also be included in the exhibit. Paula Kirkeby, who helped
to coordinate the Bruce Conner show at the Walker Art Center, which
received tremendous critical success, heads this amazing print house.
Bringing to Minneapolis with her years of expertise and knowledge of
the monotype process, this should prove to be a technically phenomenal
exhibit
.
The Friday October 27 opening is in conjunction with Kellie Rae Theiss'
opening of Margarita D'Valle's new paintings of figures and florals.
All exhibits run through December 2, 2000.
